What Does it Mean to be a Candidate for Surgery?
Dr. Buonassisi is a Board Certified Facial Plastic Surgeon and rhinoplasty specialist with 20 years experience performing this procedure. In the above video he answers a common question, “What does it mean to be a candidate for surgery?".
In "surgery speak" we often describe a patient as being a "candidate" for surgery. This isn't quite the same as deciding you would like to run for mayor and throwing your hat into the political arena. In the politics example, it is the candidate's own decision to run for mayor. Candidacy for surgery is a decision your surgeon has to make for you.

A Good Rhinoplasty Candidate
Here are the characteristics of a good rhinoplasty surgery candidate.
- Must be healthy enough to have surgery safely
- Must understand the benefits and risk of surgery
- Must demonstrate realistic expectations of what surgery will do for them
- Must have a physical feature that can be changed with surgery
This last point is often the hardest for me to explain to a patient who really wants to have surgery, but isn't, in my opinion, a good candidate. I really dislike having to decline a patient when they are excited about the possibility of a cosmetic improvement. I try to explain as best I can that not all physical features can be successfully improved with cosmetic surgery. All surgeons are operating within the constraints of what is physically achievable and the laws of physics apply.
