My Eyes Are Bruised During Rhinoplasty Recovery. When Will That Go Away?
Bruising after rhinoplasty occurs in most patients and will usually resolve itself by 10 days during your rhinoplasty recovery. Bruising can occur on the cheeks or under the eyes, and progresses in a typical way: starting off a dark purple then changing to brown and green, and descending down the face during the day when you are standing up and gravity takes effect.
Bruising is an expected part of rhinoplasty recovery and a necessary part of the healing process - and although frustrating for some patients, the best thing to do is be patient and let it go away naturally. If you give yourself sufficient time to heal and don't have to rush back to social engagements, bruising won't matter so much.
Small changes to your lifestyle pre and post operatively may help a little with bruising.
Before Surgery
- Follow your pre and post operative instructions - you will be asked to avoid blood thinning medications and supplements which are know to make bruising more prominent
- Consider taking arnica - be sure to seek the advice of your ND and keep in mind that arnica is most effective if started several days before surgery
After surgery
- Keep your head elevated while sleeping by placing 2-3 pillows under your head - sleeping upright will minimize the look of swelling
- Follow your pre and post operative instructions and avoid any medication that thins the blood for two weeks after surgery
- Avoiding smoking will improve blood flow
- Apply makeup to camouflage
